These last days of the year are always nice. Cold and windy weather outside and warm inside the house. Spending time with the family. Also fun to listen to is Grimeton Radio Station (SAQ) from Sweden. This antique radio station does its yearly transmission at 17,2 kHz in Morse code and traditional sends out a Christmas message on 24th December at 09:00 UTC.
Maybe you still remember we’ve paid Grimeton a visit last summer. Their impressive 200KW Alexanderson spark transmitter(the only operational one in the world) is only fired up twice a year. You probably don’t have a short wave receiver that is capable of receiving as low as 17,2 kHz (it least I didn’t). But there are other ways to listen to very low frequencies. Just pick your favorite KiwiSDR and check if it has any reception around 20kHz.
During our visit in Sweden there was a ‘simulation start’ of the famous Alexanderson transmitter which is really impressive. Loud noise, bells and alarms. Luckily you can witness the whole thing via live stream on YouTube.
The transmission has a duration of only 30 minutes so don’t miss it!
