POTA appears to be one of the last variants in the On The Air series. What started with Jamboree On The Air (JOTA) became Summits On The Air (SOTA), Youngsters/Youth On The Air (YOTA), Bunkers On The Air (BOTA), etc. I always liked the idea of going outside with a little portable QRP HF-radio, put up a simple antenna somewhere in nature and enjoy the low QRM instead of the S9+10dB urban noise these days. I even got as close as building a Elecraft K1 in 2011 and ended up buying a BuddyPole. But due to my substandard Morse skills and lack of time and inspiration to find a good spot in nature, I never actually got around to visiting a mountain top (except for a few holidays).
K4SWL
When I was researching what POTA stood for I came across Thomas, K4SWL. Thomas has a website: qrper.com and a YouTube channel where he has many videos about his Parks On The Air-trips. Thomas also owns many QRP radios and several portable antennas. Every POTA-activation he seems to bring other combinations. His video’s are unedited and he chats away when putting up the antenna, connecting the radio etc. Very fun and informative to watch, maybe even a bit addictive. You learn a lot about different qrp radios, portable antennas but as a wanna be Morse guy there is a lot to learn about the QSO’s that Thomas makes.
PA8E POTA?
Will it ever happen that I will be POTA active? I have no idea yet. It seems very nice. And a QRP CW transceiver like the QCX-mini from QRP-labs is of course fun to build and not expensive. And the JNCRadio MC-750 portable HF GP antenna would be an interesting antenna to take with me. Maybe I’ll contact Thomas for some advice…
