This weekend I wanted to score some contacts in the Ukrainian RTTY contest. Saturday night at 21:00 local time I set down, opened a new log in N1MM with the appropriate contest and went off. But after 4 or 5 contacts I noticed N1MM keeps sending number 001. In the logging windows it shows the correct number but MMTTY keeps repeating 001 with each new contact. Aaargh, searching N1MM manual of several thousand pages didn’t come up with a solution. Double checked contest layout, all seems correct. Restart N1MM a few times. After an hour of searching I gave up. I didn’t had the time or the energy to search any more. I did want to participate in the contest for only a few hours anyway, now I blew the whole thing off.
Next time do some test sending exchanges first long before the contest starts!
Hallo Jim, volgende keer DM780 gebruiken. Is meer voor de `casual´ contester. Vind persoonlijk N1MM slecht werken met RTTY. 73, Bas
Hi Jim,
Good morning from Shell Beach, California and thanks for uploading a comment at my blog. I understand your frustration with N1MM Contest Logger. I’ve reached a conclusion, N1MM is freeware yet I have an expectation that the program will perform as needed, as if I purchased the product.
However, N1MM failed on one occasion when it would not handshake with my Kenwood TS850S and the second glitch would not allow mode switching between CW to USB.
We consumed several hours trying to analyze ‘why’ without satisfactory results. Likewise, we are supposed to be spinning dials, turning switches, and pushing buttons on our wireless sets. Instead, I’m spending hours trying to figure out ‘why’ software isn’t performing as anticipated.
Ultimately, the long pole in the tent, I’m dumping N1MM opting instead to spend money on either WriteLog or WinTest. It is not an unreasonable expectation when purchasing a product that such product is suppose to perform as advertised? I can’t complain about freeware.
Lastly, I’m not going to consume hours on software anymore when I’m supposed to be in the shack logging or working on the conclusion of a project. I’d recommend thinking about going to the next level of contest computing and treat this like purchasing either a new keyer or antenna. Our software is as important as the wireless set and antenna system.
