The Elecraft K2 is actually a quite ‘old’ radio. But if you are just a little bit seriously about Morse code, you really should own one. Many years ago I did build an Elecraft K1. Due to my slow progress learning CW, the Elecraft K1 was mostly just gathering dust. That’s why I eventually sold it. I still regret it.

When I was watching for the K1 at the time, I also looked at the K2. I really liked that radio but it was way out of my budget. Luckily I run into one the other day. Erik PA1ET had one for sale. After a nice chat I was able to buy the K2 (SN 4415) from him. Of course it was already build so I could start using it right away. This particular sample has the following options:
First impression
When I switched on the K2 for the first time, I immediately noticed how quiet the receiver is. Of course, that also has to do with the bandwidth, but I get the impression that the K2 listens more quietly than my ICOM IC-7610! However, that is limited to the CW section. When I start listening to SSB, it becomes a completely different story. I can imagine that this is an awesome radio for Morse code!
Conclusion
After the first impression, I fully understand the K2’s reputation. That it was the reference point in the field of CW for decades doesn’t surprise me at all. Thomas K4SWL says in one of his videos: ‘If the K2 were my only radio, I wouldn’t mind at all’. I couldn’t agree more with him! The K2 is getting a nice spot in my shack, and this could very well become my go-to radio for portable work. I learned one thing from my Elecraft K1 experience: I am never getting rid of this radio!
